Motivational conflict is caused when we have limited resources and can only fill one need at a time. We must trade off the fulfillment of one need at the expense of fulfilling another. Motivational conflict can take one of three forms. There is approach-approach conflict, where a person must decide between two or more desirable alternatives, and avoidance-avoidance conflict, where the consumer must choose between two or more undesirable alternatives such as mowing the yard or cleaning the pool. Finally, a consumer can choose between a desirable and an undesirable alternative. This is called approach-avoidance.
